April 2024 - Northern Ethiopia continues to feel the humanitarian impact of the 2-year war in Tigray from 2020 to 2022. The Afar region, which was already poor, underserved, and vulnerable to climatic shocks, experienced significant population displacement and critical infrastructure destruction, including health facilities, as the conflict expanded across its borders. The drought in 2023 worsened needs and protection risks for over 275,000 highly vulnerable, internally displaced, and returning persons in the region. With GAC’s support, Save the Children aims to address the essential health and protection needs of crisis-affected populations in the Afar region of Ethiopia. Project activities include: (1) providing material and technical support to local health facilities and operating mobile health units in hard-to-reach areas; and (2) providing safe spaces, psychosocial support, and case management services to address critical protection needs, including for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
